Abstract
All horticulture fruits and some vegetables in
Egypt are infested by the damaging polyphagous insect known as the peach fruit
fly, Bactrocera zonata (Saunders, 1841). This study attends to design an
alternative way to control B. zonata using licorice, Glycyrrhiza
glabra L., roots aqueous extract (LRAE). The insecticidal activity of
three different concentrations of G. glabra roots (20000, 25000,
and 30000 ppm) were evaluated against B. zonata flies under laboratory
conditions. Furthermore, we use Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry analysis
(GC/MS) to analyze and identify secondary metabolites of the methanolic root
extract of G. glabra. The results showed that the B. zonata fly
population reduced by 93.33% after 72 h of treatment with the highest concentration
of 30000 ppm of LRAE. Based on toxicity values, three days (72 h) was the most
potent against B. zonata flies with LC50 (1970.37 ppm) and LC90
(21996.93 ppm). The insecticidal effect of the (LRAE) was concentration and
time-dependent. The GC/MS analysis of the extract revealed the presence of 42
different types of secondary metabolites with various potential bioactive
compounds beneficial for insecticidal purposes. The major bioactive compounds
identified were Benzaldehyde-4-(1-methylethyl)-, Triacetin (Glycerol
triacetate), phenol-2, 4-bis (1, 1-dimethylethyl), and some essential fatty
acids and their esters. This study identified bioactive phytochemicals from the
roots of G. glabra and shed light on its potential utilization as
insecticides that contribute to designing alternative ways as part of
integrated pest management plans for controlling B. zonata.
